In an effort to stay current with the techniques, methodologies, and changes in the field of forensic science, the LSP Crime Lab Latents Unit has started a discussion group called the “Grim Readers”.  The reading materials are suggested by group members and can be from a variety of topics and sources—forensic journal articles, new ASB/OSAC Standards or best practices, case studies, professional development, vicarious trauma/stress management, crime scenes, or anything else members may find of interest.  One article is chosen every month, and is sent out to the group.  Time is set aside each month to discuss general thoughts on the article, impacts on our unit and the discipline, pros/cons, etc.  Reading the articles definitely helps us stay up-to-date with changes or current practice in the field, and the discussions bring several different perspectives for consideration.

The next article we are discussing is attached.  There is also a Double Loop Podcast episode related to the article, linked below.

    Talking points

    • Do you feel the 3 level conclusion scale masks disagreement among examiners?
    • Would a 5 level conclusion scale be more accurate? More confusing? Both?
    • Does your agency have a conflict resolution policy?
    • How do you think you would perform in a repeatability study?
